Weekend Plans Update

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
I have a lot of thoughts running around my head tonight. It's too soon to write them all down. In brief, the ceremony was as good as these things ever are, we were blessed with decent weather for this time of year, I gave a short and apparently well-received eulogy that I don't remember, and I was OK until I actually saw him.

My plans for the rest of the weekend have changed somewhat again. We sat tonight for an hour or so, but as expected, no one came. Jewish or not, it's still Christmas Eve. I will not be back here Saturday night. They'll be sitting shiva from 7 to 9 that night, and it just didn't make sense to drive longer than that to join them. If we had someone to watch Tyson for us, that would be different. But we don't, so I'll skip Saturday night. Instead, I'll be back Sunday afternoon, from 2 to 6pm. Again, if you need directions or anything, call or email me.

To everyone that expressed sympathy to me, I really appreciate it. My inbox runneth over with LJ and FB comments, and even a private email or two for good measure. Thank you all from my heart to yours.

Happy Holidays, my friends, whichever ones you celebrate.

Funeral Details and Updates

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Heading to Boston shortly. Here is the latest information I've got. The funeral will be at 1pm at the Torf Funeral Home, 151 Washington Ave. Chelsea, MA. Here is a link to my father's obituary on their website. Directions are available there.

We'll be sitting shiva Thursday night. We won't be sitting on Saturday until after dark, so I may be in Springfield part of the day Saturday. I may not be at my mother's Sunday, depending on how things work out, but if we do it is likely we'll be staying over in the Boston area Saturday night. My mother's address is 38 Dolphin Ave, Revere, MA. If you need directions, call one of us on our cells.

Some Promised Details

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 12:42 AM
My father's funeral is going to be Thursday. I do not know the exact time, but I will try to post it here when I do. If you want to know, email me privately so I know for sure to clue you in.

The rest of my week is shaping up thus:

Wednesday: Head to Boston as soon as Aimee is done with work. Mich and Ian will join us later when she is done. Prior to leaving, there's a ton of stuff to do in the house, not including packing. We are likely going to stay in a hotel nearby, not sure exactly where.

Thursday: Funeral. Probably in the afternoon. I think we are going to sit shiva that night. Aimee and Mich have family responsibilities back in CT for Christmas Eve. Ian and I will be staying out in Boston.

Friday: Christmas with Aimee's family in Seekonk. After that, we will all be heading back to Boston, possibly Friday night, maybe not until Saturday morning. Either way, it is not likely that we will be home. Due to the holiday, my mother is not planning to sit.

Saturday: We will again be sitting shiva.

Sunday: Last day we plan to sit and receive guests.

If you want to know the addresses of the funeral home, my mother's house, etc. so that you can either attend or come to sit with us, please let me know and I will forward it to you.

I am strongly considering going to shul for the first time in I can't remember how long to say kadish for my father. My old synagogue is right down the street from the house. Assuming they still run Sabbath services (I can't find anything on their website), I may pay them a visit. We'll see how I feel in a few days.

Far too many of my friends that live in my computer sent their condolences today, certainly too many to thank individually. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

The Known Universe

  • Dec. 18th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010.

Watch it in full screen. Trust me. :-)

Words meme (from forever ago)

  • Dec. 17th, 2009 at 10:57 PM

Basically you reply with "Words!" and then I tell you five words that remind me of you. You, in turn, repost in your own journal and explain what the five terms mean to you.

I got crafting, bunnies, traveling, art and love from [info]ihadtimetokill .

Crafting – Crafting is something I do a lot. I have many unfinished projects laying around. I'll start one then get distracted by something else. The only thing I do reliably is scrapbook. It combines my love of pictures with my love of collage/mixed media. I understand I take pictures faster than I can scrapbook them, but it is the only thing I come back to time after time. I have also been know to crochet, cross stitch, make things from recycled materials. I have learned to knit a few times, but nothing ever comes of it and I also really want to learn to quilt.

Bunnies – Bunnies are something I never really thought about until a little over three years ago when I got my Holland Lop Mini Lop mix, Claude Rains. Growing up I did have six bunnies that my dad rescued, but they lived outside and really only liked my dad. Claude is everything I could ever want from a fluffy furry friend. I love him more than I should. I spoil him and sometimes make him do ridiculous things like get dressed up in Halloween costumes or get pushed around in a pet stroller. I'm at a point where I don't know what I would do without him. He's my baby. I'd like to say that I will always have a bunny, but I got lucky with him and don't know if I want to risk another one bunnies don't always have a good personality. Claude has the best personality. He loves people and getting pet or played with. We pick him up and groom him. He even likes car rides and getting dressed up. I can hand feed him. He's my perfect little lovable ball of fur.

Traveling – Traveling is something I don't do as often as I would like. It is something I do for change because I can't commit to leaving Western Mass. I love the feeling of coming home. I also love adventures more than anyone can imagine. I want to see everything and go everywhere. Lately, most of the traveling I do is for cons and I'm ok with that. One of these days I'll finally see all of America and Ireland.

Art – Art is something I stumbled into many years ago and I haven't looked back since. In high school I took every art class offered except painting. Sometime my junior year I decided I wanted to go to college for photography. That summer I took a photo class at the Hartford Art School and then applied early my senior year to the School of Visual Arts for photography. I got accepted. I spent my first year of college in New York City studying photography at one of the best art schools in the country. Still to this day I can not believe I was able to that. After deciding to transfer home, I continued on the art path. I took all the art classes I could fit into my schedule at Holyoke Community College and eventually graduated with an Associates degree in Visual Arts. After that I transferred to UMass Amherst where I began studying to be an art teacher. This is where I rounded out my art classes by taking at least one course in each medium. I also fostered my love of art history by minoring in it. After five years and three schools I finally got my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Art Education and got licensed to teach PreK˗12 in the state of Massachusetts. Now I teach art to young people and can't imagine do anything else. I also have been know to fan girl over works of art.

Love – I love love! To me it means passion and closeness, something I have learned over the years I can not live without. Love is special and very important to me. I think I come to love easily. I love my friends like family and try to tell them often. As far as romantic love goes, I have only loved four people. One of those people of was passing and another will always have a place in my heart because she was the first. The other two, I am currently in love with and one of them I have loved since I was 16.

It's a Small, Small Internet

I was on the RENT Tour website this afternoon, looking to see if there were any plans for another tour after the current one ends. Like many websites these days, they had a little Facebook plugin on the main page. It's one that displays a random sampling of Facebook fans. And I saw a familiar face!

Playing Catch-Up: September

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Hello F-list. I'm Micah. You might remember me from my previous blog entries such as "Later is Now", "I Can Haz Academia?", "KHANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!" and "Things That Were Important Today but Not Important Enough for a Long Post" (lots of those).

Aside from my Twitter posts, the three examples are share the same thing. All of them are from before my grad school workload, combined with everything else I do (Arisia, WMPE, TBC, etc.), buried me over my eyeballs in work. The last few months have been a blur, but now that I can breath a bit, I'm going to play catch-up here. Mostly for myself, so I can remember that I did more than school and TBC this fall.

Since I am so far behind, I'm going to do these in the same style I use for my con reports:

September started with the geoevent over Labor Day weekend. I actually wrote about that, in the first post linked above. Clever of me to choose that one, eh? So feel free to read it if you missed it the first time.

Speaking of geoevents, [info]pinksbrat and I attended a special event on 9/9/09. It was amusing, but the best reason to go was the special coin created just for it. Now if I only knew where I left it...

WMPPD was on the 13th. It used to be the first weekend in October, but if moving it means they'll get that kind of weather every year, I for one won't complain. This was the first Pagan Pride Day that I had absolutely nothing to do with. No planning, no organizing, nothing. It was WONDERFUL. And the event was fun, too. I am a bit worried about next year, since [info]btfulnightmare and her husband are moving away.

Did I really marry them six months ago? Where the hell has the time gone? Mazel Tov, guys!

For the first time in a few years, I made it to the Big E. We went on the 18th. Having [info]blacstag's sister in for a visit from Seattle helped. We ate our way through the New England Houses, like you do. They had a seal show this year, which was lots of fun. This was also the first time in a long time I saw them making the butter sculpture. I usually go long after it's finished.

Meeting Jill and her partner Mike was a lot of fun. But now we owe them a visit. :-)

JoCo and Paul and Storm visited the Iron Horse on the 24th. So we all did, too. Great show, as always. And as per usual, I wished that Paul and Storm had more time on stage. I really love their music, and secretly, late at night when no one can hear, I quietly confess to the cats that I like them a tad bit better.

Whew! My dirty little secret is finally out! I'm FREEEEEE!!!

I'm gonna skip all of the stuff I had to do, like classes, TBC meetings, etc. I couldn't even begin to remember all those details now, and frankly they aren't all that interesting. If they were, I would have posted then, eh?

Next up: October!

Had to Share...

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 2:31 PM
I just finished my second-to-last paper for fall semester. I got an extension on the other one, and I'll write more about that later. I really honest-to-Gods swear I will. I have a monstrous post or two waiting to be written about all the stuff I've been up to since grad school ate me September.

But for now, I had to share this. I read a webcomic called Darths and Droids. For the unfamiliar, the premise is that the Star Wars movies were actually an RPG campaign. The writers are currently working through the second prequel. In between the first movie/campaign and this one, some of the players did a high fantasy campaign that didn't go too well for one of the players. It's been a running undercurrent of the new campaign, and the latest strip gave us a little more background on what that campaign was all about.

It made me laugh. It'll make you laugh, too. So even if you don't read it or webcomics in general, take a look. And now I kinda hope someone takes this idea and runs with it. :-)
